Anigozanthos ‘Landscape Lilac’

New plants this week at Peacock Horticultural Nursery:

  • Agapanthus ‘Twister’ (one gallon pots) – Forms a 2′ x 2′ clump of green leaves for full sun to part sun.  Blooming in summer with many white flowers with a dark blue violet base.  Very hardy to 15 – 20 F.

  • Aloe deltoideodonta (one gallon pots) – a small clumping Aloe forming rosettes to 6 – 8″ wide and < 1′ tall.  This form has pale green leaves with darker parallel lines and straw margins. Hardy to about 25 F.  Salmon flowers in summer/fall.

  • Anigozanthos ‘Landscape Lilac’ (5 gallon pots) – Lilac Kangaroo Paws – Perennial to about 2 – 3′ with lavender pink flowers on 5 – 6′ tall gray pink stems from spring to fall.  Plant in full sun and hardy to about 25 – 30 F.

  • Banksia speciosa (5 gallon pots) – Showy Banksia – Large shrub or small tree to 12 – 20′ with one foot long deeply serrated green leaves with white undersides. one foot tall creamy-yellow flowers in summer/fall. Low water needs once established and hardy to 20 – 25 F.

  • Cannomois grandis ‘Large Seed Form’ (15 gallon pots)  – Tall Bell Reed – Large restio forming clumps of stems to 12 -15′ tall and 4 – 5′ wide.  Plant in full sun to part sun in well-grained acidic soil and water regularly.  Hardy to about 20 F.

  • Echeveria agavoides ‘Lipstick’ (2 gallon pots) – A succulent forming clumps of rosettes to about 6″ tall and 8 – 12″ wide with green leaves with red edges. Plant in well draining soil in full to part sun. Hardy to 15 – 20 F.

  • Echeveria agavoides ‘Maria’ (3 gallon pots) – A succulent forming clumps of rosettes to < 1′ tall and 14″ wide with apple-green leaves with red tips. Plant in well draining soil in full to part sun. Hardy to 14 F.

  • Euphorbia leucodendron (2 gallon pots) – Cat Tail’s Euphorbia – A spineless succulent that typically grows to about 4 – 6′ tall.  Plant in full sun to part sun in well drained soil and water infrequently if at all.  Hardy to about 25 F.

  • Grevillea nudiflora ‘Medusa’ (5 gallon pots) Bare Flowering Grevillea – Low growing dense mat to < 1′ tall and up to 10′ wide.  Very small red flowers mostly in winter/spring and sporadically thru the year.  Plant in full sun to part sun in well draining soil.  Hardy to about 20 – 25 F.

  • Hakea laurina (5 gallon pots) – Pin-cushion Hakea – A large shrub to small tree to 12- 20′ tall.  Round pink and white pin-cushion flowers opening in mid-winter.  Best planted in full sun in well draining soil.  Low water needs once established.  Hardy to about 20 F.

  • Parkinsonia aculeata (5 gallon pots) – Mexican Palo Verde – Small tree to 15 – 20′ tall and wide with yellow-green bark and thin leaves that create a very nice dappled shade.  Yellow, fragrant flowers in summer are very showy.  Plant in full sun in well drained soil.  Low water needs once established.  Hardy to about 18 F.

  • Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’ (one gallon pots) – Golden-yellow creeping succulent to 2-5″ tall and 1-2′ wide. Plant in full sun to part sun in well draining soil.  Best looking with some watering thru the year. Hardy to < 15 F.  Great in pots hanging over the side.  This is one of my personal favorite go-to groundcovers.

  • Selenicereus anthonyanus (2 gallon pots) Fishbone Cactus – An epiphytic cactus with 2-3′ long green stems that are deeply lobed.  Large (5 x 8″) violet-red fragrant flowers appearing spring/summer.  Great hanging plant, house plant for cool sun to light shade. Hardy only to about 30 F.

  • Trevesia palmata (5 gallon pots) Snowflake Aralia – An evergreen small tree to 15 – 20′ tall and 8 – 12′ wide with large deeply lobed leaves.  Plant in light shade to part sun and best with regular water.  Only hardy to 25 – 30 F, so protect in winter.

  • Veltheimia bracteata ‘Pastel Series’ (one gallon pots) Pastel Forest Lily – Semi-deciduous bulbs with green wavy leaves to about 1′ long.  Best to withhold water in summer and let the bulbs go dormant.  Leaves return in fall and flower in winter/spring with yellow, pink or peach tubular flowers.  Plant in light shade to part sun in well draining soil.  Hardy to about 20 – 25 F.

Echeveria ‘Electric Glow’

List of new plants includes:

  • Aloe ‘Hedgehog’ – A complex hybrid Aloe growing to about 1′ – 16″ with orange flowers in winter.  Not sure about winter hardiness.
  • Aloe Wunderkind –  Small Aloe to 4″ tall and 8″ wide with broad green leaves with wide horizontal white bands separated by narrow stripes of green with a notched light salmon pink leaf edge.  Coral-pink flowers.  Needs protection from cold and wet in winter.
  • Alpinia zerumbet  Variegata – Variegated Shell Ginger to 5 – 6′ with green and yellow leaves.  Needs some sun to very bright light to keep variegation.
  • Anigozanthos  ‘Kanga Orange’ – Kangaroo Paws – Dwarf variety to 16 – 18″ with dark yellow buds covered in red hairs that open to green-yellow flowers.
  • Asplenium trichomanes – A Maidenhair sleenwort fern to about 9″ for part shade to shade and average to moist conditions.
  • Begonia ‘Harmony Red Robin’ – Rex Begonia hybrid – A miniature with leaves that have a black center suffused with an iridescent gray and banded in a brilliant red and bordered with chocolate brown. A vigorous grower that stays under 8″ in height.  No frost and best to let dry between watering.
  • Begonia ‘Paul Hernandez‘ – One of the largest shrub begonia to 4 – 6’ tall and wide with large 2 foot wide palmately-lobed leaves that are a shiny dark olive green with an attractive pustulated texture and red veins on the upper surface and a bright brick red color below.  Can be shy to bloom with white flowers. Plant in morning sun to shade. Hardy to about 25 F.
  • Blechnum brasiliense ‘Volcano’  – Dwarf Brazilian Tree Fern – Good choice for smaller gardens as the trunk only reaches about one foot.  Had sold of these, so this is a new crop.
  • Cordyline ‘Can Can’ – A clumping form of the cabbage tree to 3 – 4′ with weeping leaves that start out red and then age to cream and green.  Best in part shade and hardy to 20 F.
  • Correa ‘Wyn’s Wonder – Variegated Australian Fuchsia to 2′ tall and 4′ wide with green and yellow leaves and red tubular flowers.  Hardy to 20 to 25 F.
  • Crassula falcata – Airplane Plant- Clumping plants to about 2′ tall with Thick fat leaves alternately arranged on the stem with clusters of tiny red flowers.  Hardy to about 20 – 25 F.
  • Crassula ‘Springtime’ – Thick succulent green leaves to 6 – 8″ with pink flowers in late winter to early spring.  Protect from winter cold and wet.
  • Dianella ‘Clarity Blue’ – Flax Lily – Blue foliage to 2 – 3′ tall. Part shade to full sun on the coast. Blue flowers.
  • Echeveria ‘Electric Glow’ – Forms 12-18″ rosettes with pastel pink and blue leaves with wavy edges.  Hardy to 20 F ?
  • Echeveria shaviana hybrid – Mexican Ruffled Hen – Rosettes to less 1′ tall and wide with deep orange and coral flowers.  Hardy to about 23 F, but probably when kept dry in winter.
  • Leucadendron ‘Safari Goldstrike’ – Gold Conebush – Shrub to 4 – 6′ with gold bracts.
  • Leucadendron s. ‘Strawberry Blonde’ – New variety for me with Ivory and Pink flowers to 3 – 4′ (?).
  • Lomandra longifolia blue green form –  Grass-like plants to about 24″ tall by 2-3′ across. This is either ‘Blue Poles’ or L. filiformis ‘Goldfields Blue.’ Very hardy to about 15 F.
  • Passiflora edulis ‘Nancy Garrison’ – Hardy Purple passionfruit vine with edible fruit.  Evergreen hardy to 25 F, and may rebound from even low 20’s.
  • Pelargonium crispum ‘Variegated Golden’ – Lime green, lemon scented leaves.
  • Pteris c ‘Albo-lineata’ – Silver Ribbon Fern – Fern to 1 -2′ tall with fronds that are white in the middle with a green outline.  Hardy to about 20 F.  Prefers moist soils in part to full shade.
  • Thamnochortus insignis – Restio – Thatching Reed to about 4 – 6′ and 6 – 9′ wide.  Hardy to about 20 F.
  • Thymus ‘Foxley’ – A variegated thyme with green and white foliage with pink flowers in summer.  Can be used for cooking.  Grows to 6 – 8″ tall and twice as wide.  For full sun to part sun.

A few new plants today including:

  • Agave ovatifolia ‘Frosty Blue’ – Whale’s Tongue Agave – Very hardy to 5 F, 3-4′ tall .  and wide.  These are nice 7 gallon specimen plants.
  • Amaryllis belladonna ‘Alba’ – White Naked Lady Bulbs – Available in one gallon pots.
  • Anigozanthus ‘Big Red’ – Red Kangaroo Paws – Big and full five gallon plants – 6 feet tall!  Really nice!  Hardy and evergreen to 25 F, and will re-sprout to about 20 F.
  • Beschorneria yuccoides – Amole – Green and red flowers in summer, 4-5′ tall, hardy to <15 F, and low water needs.
  • Cordyline ‘Cha Cha’ – Nice, full two gallons available. Hardy to about 20 F.  clumping 3-4′ weeping leaves of apricot, peach, yellow, and green.
  • Cycas panahihuaensis – Panahihua Sago Palm.  3-4′ pinnate leaves on a 4-6′ trunk.  Very Hardy and evergreen to 20 F, and deciduous to about 10 F or lower.  Large specimen plant available in 10 gallon Squat Pot.
