  • Aeonium arboretum ‘Electra’ – Purple Pinwheel – Grows to about 2′ with purple rosettes of leaves to about 6″.  Hardy to about 27 F.  Full sun near the coast and part shade inland.
  • Aeonium ‘Mint Saucer’ – Green Aeonium – Mounding 2 -3′ feet with large rosettes of green leaves.  Prefers cool sun to part sun.  Hardy to 25 – 30 F.
  • Aeonium pseudotabuliforme – Green Platters – A low growing plant with flattened rosettes of green leaves.  Perfers cool sun or part shade.  Hardy to about 25 F
  • Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ – Copper Pinwheel – Grows to 2′ tall with rosettes of variegated green and white leaves edged in coppery red.  Prefer cool sun to part shade.  Hardy to about 28 F.
  • Agapanthus ‘Twister’ – Green strappy leaves  making a 2′ mound with white flowers with a dark blue violet base in summer.  Hardy to 15 – 20 F.
  • Agave bracteosa ‘Monterey Frost’ – Frosted Candelabrum Agave – To about 1′  tall and 1 – 2′ wide with creamy white leaf margins.  Prefers cool sun to part shade,  Hardy to about 20 F.
  • Aloe Africana –  Spiny Aloe – Solitary tree-like Aloe to 6′ or more producing flowers yellow and orange flowers January thru March. Grows in full sun with little summer water once established.  Hardy to about 25 F.
  • Aloe ‘Delta Lights’ – Aloe deltoideodonta hybrid – A suckering Aloe to about 18″ x 2′ with beautiful green and white leaves.  Best in morning sun. Hardy to about 25 F.
  • Anigozanthus ‘Bush Ranger’ – Dwarf Kangaroo Paw – Grows to about 2′ with red flowers.  Plant in full sun.  Hardy to about 25 – 30 F.
  • Arctostaphylos densiflora ‘Howard McMinn’ – Manzanita – Native shrub to 7 – 10′ tall and wide with beautiful red bark and pink flowers in winter/spring.  Hardy to 0 – 10 F.
  • Cercis canadensis ‘Merlot’ – Eastern Redbud – A deciduous tree to 10 – 15 feet tall and wide with burgundy leaves and rose pink flowers in spring.  Leaves will fade to green by summer and yellow fall color.  Plant in full sun to light shade.  Hardy to 0 F.
  • Chondropetalum tectorum Thick – Cape Rush – Restio forming dense grass-like clumps to 3 – 6′ tall.  Grows in full sun to light shade with low water needs once established.  Hardy to 20 – 25 F.
  • Crassula capitella ‘Red Pagoda’ – Small scale groundcover succulent growing 7″ tall and 18″ wide with staked red-edged leaves.  Grow in full sun to get the best red coloring. Hardy to about 20 – 25 F.
  • Dyckia ‘Naked Lady’ – A terrestrial bromeliad with green plastic-looking leaves to 1′ tall and 1 – 2′ wide.  No spines along the leaf margins, but very sharp leaf tips.  Best grown in part sun (Morning sun).  Supposedly hardy to 20 F, but I have experienced damage to the plant, so perhaps needs to be dry in winter if you experience temperatures below freezing.
  • Echeveria colorata ‘Mexican Giant’ – Echeveria colorata forma brandtii selection – A large succulent forming powdering white rosettes with tinges of pink to about 1′ across.  Can be grown in full sun to part shade.  Hardy to 25 F.
  • Euphorbia leucodendron – Cat Tails Euphorbia – A spineless succulent shrub to 4 – 6′ or more.  Grow in full sun to light shade.  Hardy to about 25 F.  Very low water needs.  Caution: Sap may be irritating.  Do not touch face or eyes if exposed to the milky white sap.
  • Grevillea ‘Kings Fire’ – Shrub to 4 – 6′ with 4″ long orange-red flowers that appear nearly year-round.  Plant in full sun. Hardy to 20 – 25 F.  Low water needs once established.  Avoid fertilizers containing phosphorus.  Origin:  Australia
  • Hakea francisiana – Grass-leaf Hakea – Large shrub to 10 – 16′ with 4″ long racemes of deep pink flowers in winter to spring.  Plant in full sun.  Hardy to 18 F.  Low water needs once established.  Origin: Australia

  • Mangave ‘Mayan Queen’ – A complex hybrid of Agaves and Manfredas producing an 15″ x 3′ succulent with frosty silver-gray leaves with a dark purple mottled overlay  (best color in full sun). Plant in full to part day sun. Hardy to about 20 – 25 F.
  • Melaleuca incana – Gray Honey-myrtle – A 10′ x 10′ shrub with light yellow bottlebrush flowers in spring to summer.  Plant in full sun and hardy to about 20 – 25 F.  Needs little water once established, but looks better with occasional watering.
  • Mimulus ‘Fiesta Marigold’ – Monkeyflower – Perennial to 1 – 2′ with orange flowers  Plant in full to part sun and hardy to about 20 F.
  • Monstera deliciosa – Split-leaf Philodendron – Large tropical vine making a beautiful houseplant for bright indirect light. Hardy to about 28 – 30 F.
  • Pachypodium lamerei –  Madagascar Palm – to 6′ as indoor plant, larger in frost free areas outside. Needs protection from frost.  Grow in bright light.  Water regularly in summer and sparingly in winter.
  • Phlebodium aureum ‘Mandaianum’ – Blue Star Fern – Fern growing to 2 – 3′ with blue fronds.  Hardy to about 25 F.  Plant in full to part shade.
  • Sansevieria cylindrica ‘Starfish’ (Sansevieria cylindrica v patula ‘Boncel’) – Snakeplant – Plants grow 6 – 12″ with fat leaves.  Makes a great houseplant for bright light.  Hardy to 30 -32 F.  Plants dislike wet, soggy soil and may be prone to rot if to wet.  Water very sparingly or not at all in winter.

  • Stapelia sp. – Small succulent for part sun. Large dark colored flowers that smell like rotting flesh.  In winter avoid frost and keep plants dry.
  • Stetsonia coryne – Argentine Toothpick Cactus – Large columnar cactus to 30′ with white flowers blooming at night.  Hardy to 18 F.  Drought tolerant.
  • Trickocereus terscheckii (syn Echinopsis terscheckii) – Argentine “Saguaro” – Large columnar cactus to 15′ – 20′ with white flowers.  Hardy to 15 F.  Very drought tolerant.
