  • Acacia hubbardiana (5 gallon pots) Yellow Prickly Moses – A shrub to 4 – 6′ tall with reddish stems and 1/2″ long sharp tipped triangular shaped bright green leaves (phyllodes) and from these phyllode bases near the branch tips arise short branched axillary stalks bearing clusters of fluffy cream-colored flowers in late winter and spring that have a faint sweet aroma. Plant in full to part sun in a well-drained soil and irrigate regularly to infrequently. Drought tolerant once established but also tolerant of moist soils and cold tolerant down to around 25° F
  • Alluaudia procera (5 gallon pots) (Madagascan Ocotillo) – An unusual upright succulent shrub with paired 1/2″ long rounded succulent leaves and grey spines on whitish-gray stems Plants in cultivation can, but rarely, flower with the tiny male or female (plants are dioecious) greenish-yellow flowers. Plant in full sun in a very well-drained soil and water regularly to occasionally, only while plants are in leaf. In our climate this plant is deciduous in winter though in its natural habitat this plant is drought deciduous. Keeping plants in smaller pots is advisable to keep soils from being over saturated, especially in winter when it is leafless and the weather cooler. Hardy down to 25°F, around 20 F (?) with older plants
  • Aloe ‘Tingtinkie’ (one gallon pots) A small hybrid aloe that forms a mound of 12″ wide rosettes. The flowers are about 18″ tall that are a dark coral pink in bud and open to a cream color tipped with green. The buds are at first erect then horizontal with the flowers opening from the bottom up holding themselves downward – very showy! Plant in full sun to light shade in a well-drained soil and irrigate occasionally to infrequently. This Aloe seems to be in bloom much of the year. Hardy to 20 – 25 F.
  • Alstroemeria ‘Indian Summer’ (2 gallon pots) Peruvian lily – a perennial forming large clumps of stems to 2 – 3′ with dark bronze, green foliage. Flowers are orange and yellow with streaks of burgundy. When flowers fade, or if you are bringing in cut flowers, you should pull the stems so that they break off below ground which will stimulate new growth (being careful not to pull up the rhizome). Plant in full to part sun and water regularly. Hardy to 15 – 20 F.
Alstroemeria Indian Summer
  • Calibanus ‘Lotusland’ (3 gallon pots) A caudiciform topped by rosettes of 18″ – 24” long thin green grass-like foliage. Twenty-five-year-old specimens have bases that are nearly 5 feet tall by 3 feet across with about 50 clusters of leaves. Plant in full sun to light shade and irrigate occasionally to very little. Hardy down to at least 25 F. Thought to possibly be an intergeneric hybrid between Calibanus hookeri x Beaucarnea recurvata?
  • Echeveria agavoides ‘Lipstick’ (2 gallon pots)  A succulent forming clumps of rosettes to about 6″ tall and 8 – 12″ wide with green leaves with red edges. Plant in well-draining soil in full to part sun. Hardy to 15 – 20 F.

  • Euphorbia ‘Miner’s Merlot’ (one gallon pots) (Miner’s Merlot Wood Spurge) – A vigorous evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial with a mounding rounded habit to 2′ tall and wide with dark leaves. The long lasting inflorescences first appear in late winter in our climate, rising above the foliage in branched cymes with the small flowers held in umbels subtended by showy chartreuse to yellow bracts that are striking against the dark burgundy colored foliage well into the summer months. Plant in full to part sun in a well-drained soil and give regular to occasional irrigation. Reportedly tolerates reflected heat and is hardy to < 15 F. It is moderately drought tolerant and deer seem to avoid it, likely because broken stems exude the typical Euphorbia latex that can be toxic and irritating to the skin – best to use gloves when trimming any such plant. Euphorbia Miner’s Merlot is an attractive and useful plant in a container, perennial bed, border or within a meadow planting and the flowering stems are useful in arrangements.
  • Euphorbia myrsinites (one gallon pots) Myrtle Spurge – An evergreen perennial to about 6″ high and trailing to 1-2′ with blue-gray leaves and greenish-yellow flowers. Plant in full sun. Very hardy to < 0 F. Avoid the sap when handling this plant as it may irritate skin or eyes. This sap does keep critters from chewing on them.

  • Farfugium japonicum var. giganteum (5 gallon pots)  (Giant Leopard Plant) – A herbaceous perennial with large, rounded shiny green leaves that are 5 to 18″ across and rise up from the ground individually on 3 to 4′ stalks. In late summer through fall yellow daisy-like flowers bloom on tall branched flower stems. The Giant Leopard Plant grows best in part or bright full shade. This Farfugium will survive temperatures down to about 0 degrees F. with the foliage dying completely back much below 20 degrees F.

  • Hakea farcisciana (5 gallon pots) Grass-leaf Hakea – Large shrub to 10 – 16′ with 4″ long racemes of deep pink flowers in winter to spring.  Plant in full sun.  Hardy to 18 F.  Low water needs once established.
Hakea francisiana
  • Hakea laurina (5 gallon pots) Pin-cushion Hakea – A large shrub to small tree to 12- 20′ tall.  Round pink and white pin-cushion flowers opening in mid-winter.  Best planted in full sun in well draining soil.  Low water needs once established.  Hardy to about 20 F.
  • Parthenocissus henryana (5 gallon pots) (Silver Vein Creeper) – A scrambling deciduous vine that climbs by tendrils and disk-like suckers with green and red leaves that have a silver white coloration following the veins of the leaf. These leaves are palmately compound with the middle leaflet being the largest and with the leaf bases and underside being entirely colored a maroon red. Great fall colors. Plant in sun or shade, water regularly. Hardy to around -10 °F. This vine spreads quickly to 16-20 feet but is generally more restrained and not as dense growing in comparison to other Parthenocissus species. It is particularly noted for its decorative red foliage and is useful and attractive growing up on a fence or trellis.

  • Sansevieria masoniana (2 gallon pots)  (Mason’s Congo) – This semi-succulent plant has wonderful, long, 8-10 inches wide, dark green leaves with smudged, light green spots and a unique purple-banded sheath (often below soil level). Excellent as a large houseplant, tolerating low light levels and infrequent irrigation. On occasion, if grown in bright light, this plant forms a stalk of white flower clusters arising from the center of the plant. Hardy to at least 30° F if kept dry or in a very well-drained soil. The wide, stiff, waxy, mottled leaves will grow quite large if given the room; there are reports of it getting to 6 feet tall though we have yet to see it quite this big – usually seen at 3 to 4 feet in height and younger nursery plants that are regularly divided often remain around 2 feet and not vertically inclined for several years before new taller leaves emerge.
Sansevieria masoniana
  • Trevesia palmata (5 gallon pots) Snowflake Aralia – An evergreen small tree to 15 – 20′ tall and 8 – 12′ wide with large deeply lobed leaves.  Plant in light shade to part sun and best with regular water.  Only hardy to 25 – 30 F, so protect in winter. Great houseplant.
Trevesia palmata
  • Xanthorrhoea minor (one gallon pots)  (Small Grass-tree) – A dwarf clumping perennial with subterranean branched creating multiple (2-6) tufts of 1 to 2 1/2 foot long stiff green leaves at ground level that are three angled and held mostly upright. These tufts are in close proximity and often appear to be one grassy clump. Flowering does not occur regularly but when it does is often in late spring and unlike the other species, may have multiple flower stalks arising from each leaf crown. Also unlike the larger Grass-trees, these stalks are only 18 to 30 inch tall with the white flowers in the spike clustered in the top 4 to 10 inches. Plant in full to part sun or in bright shade. Water occasionally to infrequently. Hardy to frost.
