New plants arriving Friday at Peacock Horticultural Nursery:

Begonia acetosa

  • Begonia acetosa – Ruby Begonia (one gallon pots) – A rhizomatous begonia with round foliage that is olive green on top and velvety red underneath.  Plant is less than 1′ tall.  Great hanging plant, houseplant in bright light.  Let dry between waterings.  Plants will appreciate a little extra humidity.  Not hardy and needs protection in winter.
  • Begonia ‘Angel Glow’ (2 gallon pots) – A rhizomatous begonia with foliage that is coppery red, ruffled and spiraled.  Let dry between waterings.  Hardiness unknown, but I would assume it would need protection from cold and wet in winter.

  • Begonia gehrtii ‘Comet’ (5 gallon pots) A rhizomatous begonia with large leaves that have an crazy texture.  Amazing!  Needs bright light and regular water. Needs protection from winter cold and wet.

  • Dymondia margaretae – Silver Carpet (4″ pots) Slowly spreading, low groundcover 1 – 2″ only with gray-green and white leaves and little yellow flowers. Plant in full sun in well draining soil.  May need protection from gophers.  Hardy to 25 – 30 F.  Low water needs once established.
  • Grevillea ‘Austraflora Fanfare’  (5 gallon pots) A low growing goundcover shrub to about 1′ tall and up to 15′ wide with red brush-like flowers from winter to fall.  Plant in full sun in well draining soil.  Needs little water once established.  Resistant to deer, rabbits and gophers, but loved by hummingbirds.  Hardy to about 25 F.

  • Grevillea ‘Spirit of Anzac’ (one gallon pots) – One of the newer Grevilleas forming large shrubs to 10′ tall and 8′ wide with bright red flowers nearly year-round.  Can be pruned in late spring to keep more compact and hopefully increase flower production. Plant in full sun in well drained soil and needs little water once established.  Hardy to 20 – 25 F.  Loved by hummers.
  • Lomandra longifolia ‘Plantinum Beauty’ Variegated Mat Rush (one gallon pots) – Grass-like variegated green and white foliage to 3- 4′ tall and wide.  Can be used in full sun to part shade and will need little water once established.  Resistant to deer and rabbits.  Hardy to about 20 F.
  • Origanum Kirigami (Quart pots) – Ornamental oregano for full sun.  Great in pots hanging over the side to about 1 foot, or in the front of a perennial border.  Hardy to < 15 F.

  • Salvia ‘Desperado’ (one gallon pots) – A large hybrid sage (S. apiana x S. leucophylla) to 4 – 8′ tall and 4 – 6′ wide with aromatic white-gray leaves.  Plant in full sun in well drained soil and needs little water once established.  Hardy to 10 – 15 F.

  • Sarracenia x ‘Scarlet Belle’ (4″ pots) Pitcher Plant – A hybrid between S. leucophylla and S. psittacina producing red pitchers with white spots to 15″ long.  Grow in full sun and keep wet by setting in a tray of water.  Hardy to below 15 F . Dormant in winter.

  • Agathis robusta (five gallons pots) – Queensland Kauri – A tall conifer that may grow 80′ or more tall and 15′ or more wide.  Plant in full sun and hardy to about 15 – 20 F.

  • Agave celsii var albicans ‘UCB’ (3 gallon pots) –  Plant to about 2′ tall and 2- 3′ wide with wide glaucous-blue leaves. Plant in full sun to part sun and hardy to 20 – 25.
  • Aloe glauca ‘Namaqualand‘ (2 gallon pots) – Suckering Aloe forming a short trunk to 2- 3’ tall and wide.  Leaves are a very pale green almost white with darker green lines running along leaf and orange teeth.  Blooms are salmon colored occurring in late fall to early spring.  Plant in full sun to light shade. Very hardy to 15 – 20 F.

  • Agave potatorum ‘Ikari Raijin Nishiki’ (2 gallon pots) Small variegated Agave with cream to yellow along leaf margins and blue-gray streaks in the middle of each leaf.  Plant in full to part sun.  Hardy to about 25 F.

  • Aloe plicatilis (10 gallon squat pots) (syn Kumara disticha) Fan Aloe – A succulent shrub 3 -6′ tall or more with gray trucks ending in green leaves in a fan shape.  Orange-red flowers in late winter to early spring.  Plant in full sun at the coast to cool sun in inland.  Hardy to about 23 F.
  • Chamaedorea hooperiana (7 gallon pots) Suckering palm to 12′.  Grow outside in filtered light or grow as an indoor palm.  Hardy to about 25 F.
  • Crassula ‘Pangolin’ (4″ pots) – A succulent with scale-like leaves resembling the scales of a pangolin (ant and termite eater).  Terminal, honey scented, creamy white flowers.  Hardy to about 25 F.

  • Crassula perforata Giant Form (4″ pots) Necklace Vine – A succulent with green leaves with red edges that have the appearance of being stacked on top of each other.  Plant in full sun on the coast to light shade inland.  Hardy to about 20 – 25 F.

  • Cupressus cashmeriana (5 gallon pots) – Kashmir Cypress – A beautiful conifer with blue-green foliage forming a pyramidal shape to about 40 – 60′ tall and 15  to 20′ wide with weeping branchlets. Can be damaged by high winds and does not like prolonged periods of hot, dry weather.  Hardy to about 15 – 20 F.  Photo of one of ours in our garden.  We have three of these planted so far.  I think we love them!

  • Cyphostemma juttae (2 gallon pots) Wild Grape – A deciduous succulent shrub to 6′ with large gray-green leaves that emerge red-purple in spring and drop off in the fall.  Attractive swollen trunks (caudiciform) with papery, peeling bark. Plant in full sun in very well draining soil. Hardy to about 25 F.

  • Echeveria ‘Silver Queen’ (4″ pots) – A cultivar of E. affinis forming rosettes to about 8″ with silver-purple leaves.  Hardy to about 25 F.
  • Echinopsis subdenudata (4″ pots) Easter Lily Cactus – Small green ribbed cactus to 3′ tall and 4 – 5″ in diameter.  Produces large white, very fragrant 8″ flowers during the night.  Needs bright exposure and regular water in summer and keep dry in winter.  Hardy to about 25 F, but should protect from being wet in winter.

  • Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Sticks on Fire’ (4″ pots) Red Pencil Tree – A succulent shrub to about 4 – 8′ tall and 3 – 5′ wide with reddish-golden stems.  Plant in full sun in well draining soil.  Not hardy below 30 F and needs winter protection.  Euphorbias have a milky sap that one should be careful to avoid contact with your skin and especially keep away from your eyes!

  • Euphorbia susannae (6″ pots) Suzanne’s Spurge – Small clustering succulent to about 4″ tall and 12″ across with prominent tubercles all along the stems.  Hardy to about 25 F if dry in winter.

  • Hansara ‘Jumping Jacks’ (3 gallon pots) A tri-generic hybrid succulent forming rosettes to about 14″ tall and 27″ wide with gray-green leaves spotted purple.  Plant in full to part sun.  Hardy to about 20 – 25 F.  These plants have genes of Agave gysophila ssp pablocarrilloi , Agave macroacantha, Manfreda maculosa, Polianthes tuberosa and Polianthes howardii.  Yellow flowers on 6′ tall stems occur after a few years of growth.

  • Leucadendron ‘Ebony’ (3 gallon pots) Ebony Conebush – An evergreen shrub to 3 – 4′ tall and 3 – 6′ wide with black-purple foliage and red bracts. Plant in full sun and hardy to mid 20’s F.)
  • Oreocereus trollii (6″ pots) Old Man of the Mountain – A columnar Cactus to about 2′ covered in white hairs and dark spines.  Grow in full sun and water regularly during the growing season allowing soil to complete dry before watering again.  No water in winter.  Hardy to about 25 F if kept dry.

  • Adiantum venustum (one gallon pots) – Himalayan Maidenhair Fern – A delicate evergreen fern spreading 3′ and 6″ tall.  Hardy to < 15 F deer resistant.  Plant in light shade and water regularly.
  • Asclepias incarnata ‘Ice Ballet’ – Swamp Milkweed (Quart pots) – Summer blooming perennial with white, fragrant flowers that attract butterflies to your garden.  Grows in full sun to 3 – 3.5′.  Hardy to < 15 F.
  • Begonia ‘Plum Paisley’ (one gallon pots) – Rex Begonia with a striking mult–colored leaves of plum and silver – growing to about 12″ x 12″ for part shade or shade.  Not hardy.

  • Graptoveria ‘Debbi’ (4″pots) An evergreen succulent that is a hybrid of Graptopetalum amethystinum and an Echeveria sp. forming rosettes to about 8″.  Plant in full sun and protect from frost in the winter.  Reportedly hardy to 20 F, but perhaps only when dry.

Hesperaloe parviflora ‘Desert Flamenco’

A few new plants arrived today at Peacock Horticultural Nursery:

  • Hesperaloe parviflora ‘Desert Flamenco’ (Five gallons) – Red Yucca – This plant grows produces a 30″ x 30″ clump with spikes of pink-orange flowers starting in late spring.  Your hummingbirds will love them!  Great for that hot dry area your yard, and very hardy to (< 15 F).

  • Opuntia gomei ‘Old Mexico’ (Five gallons) – Prickly Pear – Large pads are spineless (woo hoo!) and have a wavy edge.  Grows to 4- 5′ tall and 5 – 8′ wide in full sun or part shade.  Yellow flowers in late spring/early summer.  Hardy to < 15 F and low water needs.

  • Opuntia hybrid ‘Kelly’s Choice’ (Five gallons) – Prickly Pear – A compact hybrid of O. basilaris x O. microdasys to 2.5′ tall and 3′ wide.  Watermelon red flowers in spring.  Plant in full sun and hardy to about 15 F.  Be cautious of glochids! (hair-like spines or short prickles, generally barbed, found on the areoles of cacti pads)

  • Opuntia santa-rita ‘Tubac’ (Five gallons) – Prickly Pear – Blue-gray pads turn purple in winter.  Pads do have spines and glochids, so be careful not to get these in your skin.  Plant grows 4′ tall and 6′ wide in full sun.  Yellow flowers in late spring/early summer. Hardy to about 15 F.
